McPherson College Hosts Juried High School Art Exhibition

McPherson College is exhibiting the artwork of students from 11 area high schools who have entered the college’s inaugural high school art competition. The exhibit, titled “Art Pop,” is on display now in Friendship Hall until November 30.

The student entries were selected by high school art teachers who submitted the six best pieces from this and last semester. Awards will be presented during a closing reception on November 30 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

“I think many people will be surprised by the variety of media and the high quality of craftsmanship displayed by these students,” Michaela Groeblacher, assistant professor of art and gallery director at McPherson College, said. “We invite everybody to see the exhibit and celebrate these young, promising artists.”

Student artwork from the following high schools is on display: Buhler, Chase, Derby, Hesston, Inman, Maize, McPherson, Moundridge, Salina Central, Smoky Valley, and Western Plains.

The gallery exhibition can be viewed during regular business hours, Monday through Friday in Friendship Hall at McPherson College.

McPherson College Showcases Women In Musical Theatre

The McPherson College theatre department will showcase some of its brightest vocal talent in its upcoming production of “Musical Herstory” on November 16-18.

This theatre concert performance will give its audience the opportunity to enjoy live music in a setting much like a jazz club or piano bar, according to Jd. Bowman, associate professor of theatre. “The environment of this production is unlike anything I’ve worked on for our theatre and that’s fun,” he said.

The production highlights women’s roles in musical theatre with songs from such classic musicals as “Les Miserables,” “Wicked,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and “White Christmas” as well as songs from newer works such as “R.R.E.D.,” “Side Show,” and “Jane Eyre.”

The show is the senior project of Bailey Short, who assisted in compiling the music, is the co-director, and performs as part of the ensemble. “I’m really looking forward to what each of these women will bring to this production,” she said.

Each performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in Mingenback Theatre on the McPherson College campus. Reservations can be made by calling the theatre box office at 620-242-0444 or emailing [email protected]. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3.50 for seniors and students. A First-Nighters meal will be served at 6:15 p.m. prior to each performance. First Nighters is the name of the season-ticket holders who support the theatre productions.

McPherson College Hosts High School Students For Behavior Mania Day

More than 80 students from area schools visited McPherson College on October 26 where they participated in breakout sessions with titles like “Big Head,” “We Are Having a Ball,” and “All Bugged Out.” It was all part of the college’s ninth annual Behavior Mania.

The event is an opportunity for high school teachers to bring junior and senior students to McPherson College and experience activities that bring the behavior sciences to life. Students participate in a variety of activities led by staff and faculty in the college’s behavior science department.

“This event is a great way for the behavioral science department to reach out to high school students and give them a chance to see what college behavioral sciences may be like,” Laura Workman Eells, professor of sociology, said. “While on campus they have the opportunity to meet with students majoring in behavioral sciences who serve as group guides and demonstration assistants. It’s one of the best days of the fall.”

McPherson College Associate Professor of Sociology Ku-Sup Chin led one of the groups called “Twisted Group,” where participants were required to untangle a knot of arms made by their group members without letting go of hands.

“The purpose is to show group dynamics,” Dr. Chin said. “It was fun to watch how the students interact with each other. In each group one or two students would arise as the leaders.”

Students from Salina South, Salina Central, Southeast of Saline, Herington, Kingman, Macksville, Bishop Carroll and Sterling High Schools attended the event.

“It exposes the students to think about behavior sciences in a fun way and helps them see themselves going to college and majoring in it,” Laura Vinduska, math and psychology teacher from Herington, said. “I think being here really opens their eyes to college life and helps them understand that behavior science can be a viable career option.”

Participants can register online or at the event on Friday. The registration fee includes a t-shirt, snacks, beverages, prizes and three hours of Zumba. Over 300 Vehicles Displayed at 2017 Car Show

The 2017 C.A.R.S. Club Car Show was one of the most attended ever in it’s 18 year history. The 316 vehicles on display was a record-breaking number of entries.

Senior auto restoration student and car show chairman Jason Peters thought the show was a smooth and professional and a fantastic experience for both attendees and club students alike. “We had perfect weather, phenomenal cars, great people, wonderful guests, an amazing live jazz performance and good food. What more could a car owner enjoy?”

The show is put on each year by students in the C.A.R.S. Club, most of whom are enrolled in the college’s automotive restoration program, some of them never having done a show like this. New to this year’s show was an area for local food vendors.
