McPherson College Adapting to New International Study Guidelines

(Editor’s Note: On July 14, 2020, the White House administration rescinded the order barring international students from studying in the United States if they were taking only online classes. MC continues to work with all international students for arrival to campus for the fall semester.)

McPherson College is working through the specifics of a new directive from Immigration and Customs Enforcement prohibiting international students from returning to or remaining in the United States if their college adopts an online-only instruction model for the fall. The new rule was announced on July 6.

“We have a team looking at the new ruling and exploring solutions that both meet the guidelines and allow students to complete their semester if there is a disruption,” Christi Hopkins, vice president for enrollment management, said. “Our international students are an important part of our campus and we will stand with them during this challenging time.”

McPherson College is committed to starting its fall semester on August 17 with both in-person and hybrid classes (a combination of in-person and remote instruction.) If another outbreak of the virus disrupts the fall semester, the college is exploring ways to continue to offer international students a hybrid approach that will allow them to complete the semester on campus.

Currently, the college is assisting students in the Student and Visitor Exchange Program who are able to travel without issue with their return to campus by July 26 to begin a 14-day self-quarantine prior to the beginning of the semester. Additionally, the college is reaching out to international students who are experiencing challenges in returning to campus.

McPherson College Student Receives Kansas Society of CPA’s Scholarship

Myriah Webster

McPherson College senior Myriah Webster

Myriah Webster, a senior at McPherson College, received the John J. Killian Scholarship from the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accounts. She was selected from candidates nominated by each of the independent Kansas colleges and universities.

Webster is from Marquette, Kansas, and graduated from Smoky Valley High School in 2017. She is majoring in business administration with emphasis in both management and accounting and minoring in music. She completed an internship this spring with the accounting firm Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Lloyd and this summer is working as an accounting intern with Koch Industries.

“I’ve been extremely blessed to experience the programs and the caring professors that McPherson College has to offer,” Webster said. “I never thought I’d be this far in my career before I even graduate.”

At McPherson College, she is involved in band, jazz band, business club, and was inducted into Gamma Beta Phi and Sigma Beta Delta honor societies. After graduating, she plans to obtain a master’s degree in accounting and become a CPA.

The John J. Killian Scholarship is awarded to one accounting major from the independent colleges and universities in Kansas. The recipient must demonstrate academic success not only in accounting, business, and economic curriculum but also in English and rhetoric subjects. The scholarship is awarded to students who are involved in leadership activities, have a willingness to comply with standards of professional responsibility, and possess an overall positive moral character.

Two MC Students Selected for Equity Bank Management Program

Rachel Foreman

Rachel Foreman

Cami Richardson

Cami Richardson

Two recent McPherson College graduates are joining the management-training program at Equity Bank.

Cami Richardson of Hesston, Kansas and Rachel Foreman of Holcomb, Kansas both recently graduated from the business program at McPherson College. They were selected by faculty to interview with the bank in November. Both were contacted for a second round of interviews that include Equity Bank CEO Brad Elliott, a 1989 graduate of McPherson College. The two students will join several other alumni who work for Equity Bank and who are on its leadership team. Two McPherson College students were also selected last year for the bank’s management training program.

Richardson earned a business administration degree with emphasis in accounting, finance and management and graduated summa cum laude. She was an active member of the college’s business club, was a third team all-conference player in basketball and named freshman of the year. She was also an active volunteer while at McPherson College. Foreman earned a business administration degree with emphasis in finance and management and graduated magna cum laude. She was a member of the Bulldog cross country and track teams and was named a scholar athlete. She also served as treasurer for MClub and was on its promotions team.

Equity Bank is headquartered in Wichita and has branches throughout Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

“McPherson College’s career placement rates are some of the highest in the country and we continue to elevate the scope and visibility of our career services efforts,” President Michael Schneider said. “So it is very exciting for us to have a strong partner like Equity Bank who can offer experiential and as well career opportunities for our students.”

McPherson College graduates are employed before graduation at a rate that is three times higher than the national average and six months post-graduation, 98 percent of all graduates are employed.

McPherson College Announces Plans for Fall Semester

McPherson College recently announced its plans for a condensed fall semester that will begin with on-campus classes on August 17 and conclude before Thanksgiving break on November 24. President Michael Schneider shared information about the college’s plans for the fall in his weekly update to students and families.

“The past several months have taught us that things can change quickly,” President Schneider said. ‘We are excited to get students and faculty back on campus and have been working diligently to finalize plans for a healthy and safe return to classes this fall. Our ability to adapt allowed us to move quickly to prepare for the fall semester. The campus has done a remarkable job.”

While McPherson College has maintained its day-to-day operations remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is working toward a gradual reopening of the campus that is consistent with the state’s phased plan to lift restrictions. The college has worked with task forces from across campus and with community partners to develop a plan that focuses on a healthy and safe environment when students, faculty, staff, and visitors return to campus.

Faculty is preparing for several different scenarios that allow classroom and on-campus instruction for the fall. Faculty will be ready to deliver courses in hybrid formats as needed to accommodate for any disruptions to in-person classes. All classrooms, labs, studios, shops, and other campus facilities will be accessible to students provided there are no mandates from local health officials. In the event of health restrictions, the college is prepared to implement social distancing measures in these spaces.

The fall semester will begin with fewer students living in the residence halls and limitations on common spaces as well as practicing important personal hygiene behavior. Residence hall staff will be prepared to implement social distancing with single-point entry, bathroom assignments, and one-way stairwells to prevent the spread of the virus on campus.

The college is finishing a health and safety plan to guide students and staff through the fall semester and beyond, and continues to follow guidance from national, state, and local health officials. Custodial crews began cleaning and sanitizing residential halls, classrooms, labs, athletic facilities, the dining hall, and administrative offices as soon as students were safely off campus using guidelines from the CDC, state, and local health offices. Increased sanitizing will continue as campus reopens.

“After we complete plans that will include advice from health experts and the McPherson County Health Department, we will host a community forum to discuss impacts on the greater community,” President Schneider said.

The college is also working with its campus health clinic partner to assure that students, faculty, and staff will have access to virus testing when classes resume this fall.

There is still some uncertainty about what the fall sports season will look like on all college campuses. McPherson College is working closely with the NAIA to develop plans that provide student-athletes with the best possible experience while minimizing any health risk. The NAIA’s goal is to make an announcement about the fall season by July 1. The college athletic facilities will reopen in the fall as long as there are no restrictions from state or local health officials. Additionally, the college is ready for fan attendance at athletic events as long as there are no restrictions from state officials, local health officials, Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, or the NAIA. The college will also prepare to accommodate capacity numbers that support social distancing if necessary.

McPherson College Student Receives Statewide Scholarship

MC student Aaron Leck

Aaron Leck is a senior at McPherson College majoring in biology and minoring in philosophy.

Aaron Leck was recognized by the Kansas Independent College Foundation (KICF) for his excellence in academics, character, and integrity, along with his commitment to the value of a private college education in Kansas. He was among 20 students from private colleges across the state to receive the Maud Wyatt Recognition Scholarship presented by KICF.

Leck, who is from McPherson, is a senior at McPherson College majoring in biology and minoring in philosophy. He hopes to be in a position where his work helps others after he graduates and is looking forward to the scientific research in biology and the philosophy thesis he will write as part of his senior capstone projects. Recipients of the scholarship are full-time, degree seeking students on the cusp of graduation who maintain GPAs of 3.5 or above and contribute to their communities.

Along with his studies, Leck is a member of Gamma Beta Phi, a service honor society, and Beta Beta Beta, a biology honor society. He was an inaugural member of Gamma Beta Phi and places importance on seeking out service opportunities. He hopes to become a foster parent in the future. He is also a participant in the McPherson College Student Debt Project, which helps students reduce their student debt through work, mentorship, and financial literacy education.

“McPherson College puts an emphasis on service, and through service opportunities, helps students realize the impact it can have,” Leck said. “The staff and faculty also lead by example, always willing to put in the hard work, and go the extra mile for students. This has provided several role models upon which to base my work ethic.”

McPherson College Celebrates Class of 2020 in First-Ever Virtual Graduation

202 Virtual Commencement

Although the McPherson College 132nd Commencement Ceremony took place on campus in an empty Brown Auditorium, it will likely be one of the most memorable commencements in the history of the college.

McPherson College conferred degrees on 139 students in the first-ever virtual Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 24. The college announced in April that it would host a virtual ceremony on the scheduled date of commencement. The ceremony was streamed live on the college’s website.

In his address to the graduates, President Michael Schneider, reminded students of the simple advice he learned from his grandmother and has passed along to students each year as freshmen.

“Every year I share a couple of secrets to success at McPherson College, and here they are again. Number one is show up, and number two is ask for help. It seems easy but when you do it over and over again, guess what? You end up right where you are sitting as McPherson College graduates.”

Commencement celebrations kicked off earlier in the day with a President’s Zoom Brunch for seniors and their families. The virtual event featured special faculty guests, class memories, a cap-decorating contest, and the senior address given by Diamond Marshall, 2019-20 SGA president. In her address to the class, Marshall said, “Celebrate your perseverance and each other. Each of you should be proud because when the world came to a close; our community strengthen and continued on.”

Prior to the ceremony, Lillian Oeding and Kento Aizawa, both members of the graduating class, performed an instrumental duet of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

The entire ceremony including the pre-ceremony program, and list of graduates are available on the college website at www.mcpherson.edu/experiences/graduation.

McPherson College Plans Virtual Commencement

McPherson College will honor the 2020 graduating class with a virtual Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 24, 2020. The college will Livestream the ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. CDT.

In an announcement to students, President Michael Schneider explained the decision to transition the traditional ceremony to a virtual event, “There are already too many hardships on students and families given this situation. Families have the current date saved, so we are proceeding with a virtual commencement to allow everyone an opportunity to participate no matter their location.”

Students will receive their cap and gown in the mail prior to commencement. Members of the Class of 2020 and their families and friends are invited to gather online as faculty members recognize them and the college confers their degrees. The streamed ceremony will feature formal remarks and slides of each of the graduates.

The virtual event is in response to the continued limitations on public gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic. The college announced to its students on March 17 that the remainder of the spring semester would be completed remotely using online resources because of the outbreak.

In the weeks leading up to Commencement, the college social media will focus on seniors and their activities. Follow all of the McPherson College on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Classes Begin Remotely for MC Students

Grant Barrett

McPherson College student Grant Barrett works on classes from home.

McPherson College students returned to coursework remotely on Monday, March 30 after a two-week expanded spring break. Although students and faculty did not return to campus, they did begin adapting to their new normal.

The college announced to its students on March 17 that the remainder of the spring semester would be completed remotely using online resources because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

“It is not the semester that any of us planned but we are all working together to move forward despite the challenges,” Michael Schneider, McPherson College president, said. “Our students are adapting to a new normal as they transition to online courses. Faculty has exceeded my expectations to recreate how learning will happen this semester.”

In a video shared with campus last week, faculty and staff members encouraged students as they began classes.

“The faculty has been working hard over the past couple of weeks to meet the challenge of remote learning,” Dustin Wilgers, associate professor of biology, said in the video. “With every challenge there is opportunity. I’ve been able to engage my class content in brand new ways and even found new tools for the classroom.”

College administration is collaborating with students, faculty, and staff on ways to support student learning and keep students engaged. Academics and student life offices are connecting with students through the college social media channels encouraging student involvement with a variety of creative ideas that range from virtual office hours to blanket fort challenges.

“Social media is a great way to stay connected,” President Schneider said. “It’s been encouraging for all of us to keep that connection with our students. I’d invite everyone to follow our social media and check out everything our students are doing on our virtual campus.”

Other aspects of the college have transitioned to online as well. Although prospective students are not visiting campus in person, campus visits and other recruiting events continue virtually. The college recently hosted the first-ever Virtual Presidential Scholarship Competition, one of its largest events for prospective students, with nearly 100 students registered to participate.

“This is definitely an unprecedented time but what is certain is how positive, diligent, and caring the staff and faculty have handled it,” Nick Navarro, an automotive restoration student, said. “As a senior, I am disappointed that I won’t finish college the way I had hoped. It’s important to see the bigger picture and looking back over the past four years, I can see how far I have come.” Updates about the campus regarding the COVID-19 outbreak can be found at www.mcpherson.edu/covid, and the college is sharing information and on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

McPherson College Band Works With Composer for KMEA Concert

McPherson College Concert Band

It is a big moment for the McPherson College band.

The band will perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) state convention on Feb. 27 at Century II in Wichita. This is the second time in the past three years that KMEA has selected the band to perform.

Kyle Hopkins, director of bands and associate professor of music, says being selected to play at the convention that hosts thousands of musicians and music educators from the across the state is always an honor, but it is remarkable for a band consisting primarily of non-music majors to be selected twice in such a short time.

“I am proud of what we have built in our band program with mostly non-majors. It’s always been my mission to make music a part of my students’ lives regardless of their majors,” he said. “It’s really unheard of that a band from a small college like ours is selected to perform twice in three years.”

The performance is special for another reason as well. The band will perform an original piece of music composed exclusively for it by Meri Jenkins, a musician from Wichita. Jenkins has a degree in music performance from the University of North Carolina and studied composition there. She writes chamber music for the quintet Intrepid Brass and performs with the Wichita fusion jazz and funk band, Daydream. This is the first time she has written for a full band.

“This is a really big deal,” Jenkins said. “I hope it is the beginning of a career. It’s both exciting and terrifying to think about it being performed to such a big audience and one that is so musically oriented. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that people like it and want more.”

Performing new music is not unusual for a band and is an important part of the band experience, Hopkins explained. It is common for bands to form consortiums and commission new works. However, the McPherson College band took this practice a step further and worked one-on-one with a new composer to create a new work written specifically for the band.

“This was a really a unique experience for all of us,” Hopkins said. “We were able to meet so many times and have great interaction with the composer. The students loved being part of the process. If they had their way, all we would play is Meri’s piece.”

The work titled, “The Sisu Within You,” refers to a Finnish construct that means discovering extraordinary courage, determination, perseverance, and dignity after reaching the end of physical, emotional, and psychological endurance like a “second wind” of inner strength. Jenkins said titles for her compositions usually come at the end of her writing process but that was not the case this time.

“I like to name my pieces with words that don’t translate easily to English but describe complex feelings,” she said. “This one came to me before I was finished. This was a very big undertaking and I was questioning if I could finish. It was how I felt when I was writing this. I had to find that within myself.”

Both Jenkins and Hopkins play horn and perform with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and Wichita Grand Opera. Jenkins has a master’s degree in horn performance from Wichita State University and when Hopkins learned she also composed, he proposed that she create a piece for his concert band.

“It was a leap of faith for both of us,” Hopkins said. “It was a huge risk for her because she had never composed for a full band, and it was a gamble for me placing my faith in such a new composer.”

According to Hopkins, the gamble paid off. Because Jenkins spent so much time getting to know the band, she was able to write music that featured individual musicians and highlighted the strengths of the ensemble. She also incorporated thematic suggestions made by the students.

“Trying to find ways to create community within the band can be challenging,” Hopkins said. “We are all together only about three hours a week so having time for something that is unique and binding isn’t easy. The creative process with Meri was very much a community-building activity. It gave us a sense of us.”

Jenkins agreed that composers do not often get an opportunity to work closely with the performers and she appreciated all the time she was able to spend with the students.

“Being able to break through the barrier between composer and performer really inspired me,” she said. “Getting to hear the excitement of the students is what fueled me. Kyle believed in me as a new composer and now it’s my turn to believe in them to perform my piece. I am very proud of all the students and how they embraced my work.”

The band debuted the new work at its fall concert in November. Since then, Jenkins and the band have reworked much of the arrangement. There will be one other opportunity for audiences to hear the piece this year when the band performs it on March 8 at McPherson College during a collaborative concert with Hutchinson Community College.
